Paying it forward – a service user offers their services
“A few years ago I was helped by the Money Advice team at ACT. I had been struggling with household bills and was in a difficult situation with an alcoholic partner spending everything, and 2 young children to feed. I had debts from our previous house and everything was getting too much.
I asked for help and was referred to ACT from Iceni. I met one of the Money Advisers and he went through everything with me. We sorted and put in order all my bills and he spoke on my behalf to various debt collectors – back then I had lost the confidence needed to do this.
5 years on I have the confidence to sort all the bills and I refuse to get into debt again. It took time and I had a few problems at first keeping up with payments but now I set one day aside each month to deal with money matters.
This summer, I went to the Suffolk Show and saw the Anglia Care Trust tent. I walked in to be offered a free cup of tea and noticed they were asking for volunteers. I wanted to help others struggling like I did and give something back. After some brilliant training, I’m now actively volunteering within several different services at ACT, including Money Advice, Housing and the Independent Advice service. I am enjoying the experience and making a difference which has even given me more confidence to set my own support group up – I’m now applying for paid employment based on the valuable experience I have gained. Thank you ACT! I would recommend anyone to volunteer with them.”
