ACT on poverty – ACTober for those in need

We launched a new initiative on 1st October to help raise awareness of, and appeal for donations for those in need.

The message we’d like to get across is that the weather is changing; now is the time when vulnerable people need your help. We’re all aware of the fantastic shoebox donations and reverse advent calendars that happen over the Christmas period but donations of food, money and clothing are needed all year round – especially now, as we’re moving into Autumn & Winter.

ACT will be supporting FIND (Families In Need, Ipswich), in collecting donations, and will become a donation point for FIND during the month of October, here at our offices in Martlesham. We’ll also be doing a clothes swap amongst our 65 staff and 130 volunteers to mark the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Tuesday 17th October (http://www.un.org/en/events/povertyday) in order to boost our appeal – all clothes not swapped will be donated.

We will be asking our staff, volunteers and colleague agencies for donations throughout the month of October, but we also want to highlight our initiative to all members of our community in the hopes that they will join in and donate to those in need. We’re calling our initiative: ‘ACTober’.

We want to be very specific on the type of items that are donated – to ensure that FIND receive clothes/food that are useful to those who need them – the charity was started nearly 30 years ago by Maureen Reynel MBE and, with her experience, she can recommend items that she knows are most needed.

All items must be clean and in good condition with no missing buttons and working zips. No dirty or ripped clothing or bedding, or that which is past it’s best – we need items that are useful and will last:

  • Coats – must be longer length (no jackets), dark colours, with hoods and should be waterproof.
  • Hats, gloves, scarves – must be lined/warm and dark colours
  • Clothing – for example, comfortable trousers (tracksuit bottoms are both warm and practical)
  • Towels – large towels with lots of life left in them
  • Toiletries – male toiletries only please – shower gel, deodorant, shampoo
  • Food – non-perishable food with a reasonable shelf life; 2018 minimum

ACT’s offices are open Monday to Friday 9-5 and are at 8, The Square, Martlesham Heath, Ipswich, IP5 3SL and we are collecting donations throughout the month of October – we welcome anyone who’d like to make a donation to our ACTober appeal.
